Blacks, from friendly to serious

Breck has more black runs than most people expect, and they range from groomers that ski like hard blues to steep, bumped-up fall lines that will find out how good your legs are. Peak 8 has the most of them. Peak 10 has the best concentration, because there's nothing easier on it.

Weather decides a lot. On a grey day, stay in the trees on Peak 10 or Peak 7. When it's clear, the Back Bowls and the T-Bar are the place to be.

Black runs

Fourteen blacks we love

Spruce

A black that skis like a hard blue.

Between the Colorado and Rocky Mountain SuperChairs, usually groomed and on the mild side for a black. The obvious first step up.

Our tip: Ski Spruce and Rounders before you try anything on Peak 10.

Rounders

Mild and often groomed.

Next to Spruce, and just as friendly. Named after Bill "Rounder" Rounds, the resort's first developer.

American

Wide and smooth.

A wide black that strong intermediates handle well. Handy for one steeper run in the middle of a day on the Peak 9 blues.

Peerless

Another wide Peak 9 black.

Wide and smooth, like American. A good one to try once the Peak 9 blues feel easy.

Volunteer

Wide open.

The third of the wide Peak 9 blacks that work well for strong intermediates.

Centennial

Steep cruising.

One of the best steep groomers at Breck when it's freshly cut. Off Falcon SuperChair, so there's no easy way down if you change your mind.

Cimarron

Another steep cruiser.

Wide and smooth, and a step up from the Peak 9 blacks. Good first thing after grooming.

Crystal

Straight down under the lift.

Best after new snow, when it's covered up nicely. Everyone on the chair can watch you ski it.

Spitfire

Bumps all the way.

Steep, consistent and usually bumped up. If you want moguls, this is the place.

Corsair

More Peak 10 bumps.

Spitfire's neighbour, with the same steep, bumpy character.

The Burn

Trees that hold the snow.

Breck's most popular tree run. The trees are tighter on the right side, and that's where the snow stays good longest after a storm.

Ore Bucket

Spaced trees and bumps.

A wooded run with moguls, often less crowded than the rest of Peak 7. The trees are wide apart, so it tracks out quickly after a storm.

Psychopath

Open and steep.

One of the Back Bowls off the 6-Chair. The chair is slow, which keeps the crowds down.

Boneyard

Another Back Bowls favourite.

Open and steep, next to Psychopath. Best on a clear day when you can see the terrain.

Quick tip

Ski & snowboard rental

Book online before you arrive and pick your gear up in town the evening before. The morning rush at the base shops can eat your first hour, and booking ahead can be cheaper.

Quick tip

Lift tickets & the Epic Pass

Breck is on the Epic Pass. Buying a ticket at the window on the day is the most expensive way up the hill, so buy ahead online or look at an Epic Day Pass if you're here for a few days.

The Friday snow email

One short email a week in season: what fell, what's open, and where to ride this weekend.
