Planning your trip

When to go

The 2026–27 season opens on Friday, November 6. Breck usually stays open into spring, and the upper mountain often keeps going later than the lower runs when there's snow.

  • November to mid-December: early season. Fewer runs open, mostly groomers, lower prices and quieter slopes.
  • Christmas to New Year: the busiest stretch of the year. Book lodging and lessons early.
  • January: cold, often good snow, and quieter outside holiday weekends. Our pick for value.
  • February: deep mid-winter snowpack, but Presidents' Day weekend is busy.
  • March: the snowiest month at many Colorado resorts, longer days, and spring break crowds.
  • April onwards: spring skiing, sunshine and softer snow. Check what's still open.

Long weekends (Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January, Presidents' Day in February) bring Front Range crowds and heavy I-70 traffic. Mid-week is always quieter.

How long to stay

Five or six ski days is the sweet spot for a first trip. Day one is about the altitude, days two and three you'll find your feet, and by the end you'll have skied all five peaks. Shorter trips work too, but leave a rest day if you're driving straight up from sea level.

Lessons and kids

The Breckenridge Ski & Ride School teaches at the base areas, with group and private lessons for kids and adults. The resort's ski & ride school map shows where each meets.

For first-timers, the beginner terrain at the Peak 8 and Peak 9 bases is the place to start, including Rip's Ride, a slow beginner chair at Peak 8. Over a week, most beginners can reach the easier blues on Peak 9 and Peak 7.

With kids, base yourself somewhere you can walk or bus to their lesson meeting point. Getting small children and their gear across town at 8:30 every morning is the hardest part of the day.

Quick tip

Ski & snowboard rental

Book online before you arrive and pick your gear up in town the evening before. The morning rush at the base shops can eat your first hour, and booking ahead can be cheaper.

Quick tip

Lift tickets & the Epic Pass

Breck is on the Epic Pass. Buying a ticket at the window on the day is the most expensive way up the hill, so buy ahead online or look at an Epic Day Pass if you're here for a few days.

The Friday snow email

One short email a week in season: what fell, what's open, and where to ride this weekend.
